What is a pincer nail (also called a trumpet nail)?
Where the nail is folder or trumpet looking.
What causes it?
A number of things can cause pincer nails/ trumpet nail. Genetics can be a cause...but many times a pincer nail can develop because of shoes that pinch the toes together or improper maintenance of cutting or filing. Pincer nails are more common in the elderly, diabetes, liver problems, and medication can affect the health of a nail.
How do I prevent it?
Treatment for pincer nails is correct by filing or surgery. Once the nail is cut below the free edge there is a very big chance of getting an ingrown toe nail. That is why it is best to not shorten them too short. Corrective filing and cutting allows the nail to grow and widen so the edges don’t dig into the skin.
